NVIDIA and Samsung Expand GALAXY Smartphones With New GALAXY R Smartphone
The Galaxy R device, which was originally called the Galaxy Z, will be tipping up 'soon' with Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor and the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. It will be a smaller version of the company's Galaxy S II model.
Michael Rayfield, GM of Nvidia's mobile business said, "Samsung's newest super phone shows off Tegra's multimedia power, and is a great example of what consumers expect from one of the world's top phone makers."
At the beginning of July there was some hype about the Galaxy Z, which Samsung said it didn't have plans to launch in the UK. Well, the Galaxy R is the same handset with a 4.19in Super Clear LCD touchscreen, unlike the Galaxy S II AMOLED touchscreen display.
We knew the handset would have a 1GHz dual-core processor but we assumed it would be one of Samsung's own chips, not Nvidia's Tegra 2 that is normally found in Android 3.x Honeycomb tablets.
Alongside the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor chip will be a Nvidia Geforce GPU for "fast Web browsing with hardware-accelerated Adobe Flash Player support, full HD video and console-quality gaming".
Samsung has confirmed the size and weight of the Galaxy R at 9.55mm thick and 131g along with 8GB of internal storage. From the images we gather that the handset will have a 5MP rear facing camera, which is a few megapixels less than the 8MP camera in the Galaxy S II.
Nvidia said users "can also access Tegra-optimized games through the Tegra Zone app on Android Market".
The GALAXY R gives more consumers the opportunity to enjoy the never-before-seen experiences enabled by Tegra, the world's first mobile processor with a dual-core CPU. The GALAXY R also features a GeForceâ„¢ GPU for fast Web browsing with hardware-accelerated Adobe Flash Player support, full HD video and console-quality gaming.
Using the GALAXY R, consumers can multitask efficiently, surf the Web quickly with fast-loading pages and Flash-based content and enjoy HD movies. They can also access Tegra-optimized games through the Tegra Zone app on Android Market.
"Samsung's newest super phone shows off Tegra's multimedia power, and is a great example of what consumers expect from one of the world's top phone makers," said Michael Rayfield, general manager of NVIDIA's mobile business.
