Microsoft switching from gloss to matte Xbox 360 consoles

Gloss (left) vs matte (right) Xbox 360 consoles

Microsoft revealed on Friday that the company plans to switch to a matte finish for all their Xbox 360 models.

The software giant revealed the change to combat Internet rumors that suggested the company would offer matte and gloss finishes in future. “We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360 S consoles to a matte finish,” said Microsoft’s Larry Hryb in a
blog post on Friday. “The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don’t wait much longer.”

Microsoft didn’t reveal the reasons behind the change but it’s believed matte finish consoles will reduce manufacturing costs and the requirement for two types of cases. Microsoft ships its Xbox 360 4GB model with a matte finish and its Xbox 360 250GB with a gloss finish at the moment. The company isn’t killing off gloss for every console though. Limited edition consoles like the upcoming
Gears of war 3 console and the Star Wars console will still feature a gloss finish.
